In one of the better casting decisions made in a long time, Sacha Baron Cohen has signed on to star as Freddie Mercury in the upcoming biopic on iconic rock band Queen. The unnamed film, which is being written by prestige film go-to-guy Peter Morgan (Frost/Nixon, The Queen, The Last King Of Scotland), will be “focused on the band’s formative years, leading up to Queen’s appearance at Live Aid in 1985.” Song rights have already been approved and the remaining members of the band are not only supportive of the project, but involved in the production.
It’s unclear whether or not Sacha will attempt to match Mercury’s ridiculous vocal range or if he’ll lip-sync over his voice. Either way, there’s a lot of potential for greatness here. Speaking of which, here’s Queen performing “Bohemian Rhapsody” the year after that Live Aid performance at Wembley Stadium.
