Scientists say they have found a way to disarm the AIDS virus in research that could lead to a vaccine.  Researchers have discovered that if they eliminate a cholesterol membrane surrounding the virus, HIV cannot disrupt communication among disease-fighting cells and the immune system returns to normal.

Saudia Arabia Gives Women Right To Vote/Run In Elections – [Guardian]

Saudi Arabia’s King Abdullah has said women will have the right to stand and vote in future local elections and join the advisory Shura council as full members.

“Because we refuse to marginalise women in society in all roles that comply with sharia, we have decided, after deliberation with our senior ulama [clerics] and others … to involve women in the Shura council as members, starting from the next term,” Abdullah, 87, said in a speech.

“Women will be able to run as candidates in the municipal election and will even have a right to vote,” he added.

Released Hikers Describe Their Ordeal In Iran – [CNN]

“We lived in a world of lies and false hope,” said Josh Fattal, an American who on Sunday described his and fellow hiker Shane Bauer’s two years in solitary confinement in an Iranian prison as “the worst experience of our lives.”

“They told us … falsely that we would be given due process and access to our lawyer,” Fattal said. “The most infuriating, they even told us that our families had stopped writing us.”

Tumblr Lands $85 Million In Additional Funding – [NY Times]

On Monday, the company will announce it raised $85 million in fresh financing. The round was led by Greylock Partners and Insight Venture Partners, and the Chernin Group, Richard Branson, Spark Capital, Union Square Ventures and Sequoia Capital also contributed. To date, the company has raised roughly $40 million in funding.

David Karp, who founded the company in 2007, said in a news release that the extra money “allows us to continue to scale our business and give real focus to the further development of Tumblr.”
