Reflections On The Eiffel Tower

by Endswell 1 month, 27 days ago View Comments

A shot from The Counter-Earth, a series of stunning photographs by Trey Ratcliff:

There was a big storm all day long, but I could see the clouds were beginning to break up a little to the west, and I knew there was a possibility the sun would dip into an opening beneath the heavy clouds. So, with that intense possibility, I headed over to the Eiffel Tower area hoping the light would turn out right..

Deadmau5 & Nokia Light Up Millbank Tower

by Endswell 1 month, 28 days ago View Comments

Nokia teamed up with deadmau5 to promote its Lumia 800 with Windows phone, using an entire side of London’s Millbank Tower to provide the visuals.

From NokiaUK:

Millbank was plunged into darkness with the iconic tower acting as the canvas for a never-before-seen spectacular. Each of the 120 metre high building’s 800 windows were covered with vinyl as 16 powerful projectors, stationed 300 metres away on the other side of the river, beamed 3D images onto the structure. Huge butterflies flew across the London skyline and the tower was twisted, pulsated and even fell down. Billed as the “future of live events” the spectacular show was accompanied by music from super producer deadmau5, who created exclusive remixes for the performance — adding the 4th dimension.

Dutch Assholes Make Deadly New Bird Flu Strain, Want To Go Public – [PopSci]

Inside a Dutch medical facility is a potentially devastating weapon that could kill millions: A genetically modified version of the H5N1 bird flu, engineered to be easily transmitted among ferrets. And the researchers who figured out how to do it would like to share their work with the world.

The main paper is by virologist Ron Fouchier of Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, who was studying how the bird flu virus could mutate to spread easily among people. He engineered the genome of H5N1 to make a virus that easily spreads among ferrets — the best animal model of the human response to flu — and says it proves bird flu can mutate to spread among the human population, according to Science Insider. He distributed one virus among different ferrets multiple times, essentially inducing it to adapt. After 10 virus generations, it became airborne, infecting healthy ferrets who were simply housed next to a sick one.

The Roots – undun (Album Stream)

by Endswell 1 month, 28 days ago View Comments

The Roots’ first concept album (and 13th studio album) hits stores December 6th.

undun is an existential re-telling of the short life of one Redford Stephens (1974-1999). Through the use of emotives and Redford’s internal dialogues the album seeks to illustrate the intersection of free will and prescribed destiny as it plays out ‘on the corner’. Utilizing a reverse narrative arc, the album begins as the listener finds Redford disoriented–postmortem–and attempting to make sense of his former life. As he moves through its pivotal moments he begins to deconstruct all that has led to his (and our own) coming undun.

“At this point in our career we’d like for our work to have a unifying theme, and an experiential quality,” says Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson, 40. “We’ve been intentionally making our albums shorter in length so that they can be experienced as a continuous work. The music is band-oriented with an eye on the moody cinematic. As a DJ, I am the King of playlists, but I don’t want our albums to feel like a playlist or a mixtape for that matter. We want to tell stories that work within the album format and we want the stories to be nuanced and useful to people. undun is the story of this kid who becomes criminal, but he wasn’t born criminal. He’s not the nouveau exotic primitive bug-eyed gunrunner like Tupac’s character Bishop in “Juice”… he’s actually thoughtful and is neither victim nor hero. Just some kid who begins to order his world in a way that makes the most sense to him at a given moment… At the end of the day… isn’t that what we all do?”
