7 Outrageous Hoaxes That Actually Worked – [Cracked]

Hackers Nabbed 1.5 Million Visa and MasterCard Customers’ Information – [The Altantic Wire]

The hack into Visa and MasterCard payment processor Global Payments turns out to have been massive, exposing 1.5 million customers’ information (including account numbers) and costing the third-party contractor its spot on Visa’s registry of secure providers.

When news of the data breach hit on Friday, the scope was a little unclear. But on Sunday night, Global Payments announced that up to 1.5 million accounts had been compromised and that “the thieves ‘exported’ the information, which is typically more serious than hackers who are only able to break in and view the data,” according to The Wall Street Journal‘s Robin Sidel. The stolen credit card data can be used to create counterfeit cards that charge to unsuspecting customers’ accounts. “The company said that credit card data may have been stolen, but that cardholder names, addresses and Social Security numbers were not obtained,” the Associated Press reported.

In Hiding, Bin Laden Had Four Children and Five Houses[NY Times]

Osama bin Laden spent nine years on the run in Pakistan after the Sept. 11 attacks, during which time he moved among five safe houses and fathered four children, at least two of whom were born in a government hospital, his youngest wife has told Pakistani investigators.

The testimony of Amal Ahmad Abdul Fateh, Bin Laden’s 30-year-old wife, offers the most detailed account yet of life on the run for the Bin Laden family in the years preceding the American commando raid in May 2011 that killed the leader of Al Qaeda at the age of 54.

Navy: We’re 4 Years Away From Laser Guns on Ships[Wired]

The dream of sailors, nerds and sailor-nerds everywhere is on the verge of coming true, senior Navy technologists swear.  Within four years, they claim they’ll have a working prototype of a laser cannon, ready to place aboard a ship. And they’re just months away from inviting defense contractors to bid on a contract to build it for them.

“Subsonic cruise missiles, aircraft, fast-moving boats, unmanned aerial vehicles” — Mike Deitchman, who oversees future weapons development for the Office of Naval Research, promises Danger Room that the Navy laser cannons just over the horizon will target them all.

Dumb and Dumber 2 Begins Production This September – [Coming Soon]

Last summer, ComingSoon.net broke the news that Jim Carrey was in discussions with Bobby and Peter Farrelly to develop a sequel to their 1994 film Dumb and Dumber. Then, in October, it was revealed that Sean Anders and John Morris had come aboard to provide the screenplay. Today, at the junket for he and his brother’s latest, The Three Stooges, Peter Farrelly says that not only is Dumb and Dumber 2 coming, it’s set to begin production later this year.

“We’re getting set to shoot ‘Dumb and Dumber 2’ in September,” he says. “It’s the first sequel we’ve ever done and we’ve got Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back.”
