What has always appeared to be a candid shot of construction workers casually eating lunch on a beam 69 stories above Manhattan may not have been so candid after all.

Corbis’ chief historian Ken Johnston told The Independent that the photo (which was acquired by Corbis in 1995) was “a publicity effort by the Rockefeller Center. It seems pretty clear they were real workers, but the event was organised with a number of photographers.”

The iconic photo celebrated its 80th anniversary yesterday.
