A day after being sentenced to 35 years in prison for leaking classified information to Wikileaks, the Army private formerly known as Bradley Manning announced that she would like to be referred to by her new name, Chelsea Manning, and by feminine pronouns in a statement read on TODAY.

During the trial, her attorneys presented an email from April 2010 in which she said she was transgender and joined the Army in order to “get rid of it.”

Manning will be imprisoned at the US Disciplinary Barracks in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, where she will presumably be a woman whether she wants to be or not for at least a third of her sentence, at which point she will be eligible for parole.
