Tim Doyle presents his reinterpretations of iconic television locales in his exhibit, Unreal Estate, which will be on display at Spoke Art Gallery in San Francisco from February 2, 2012 through February 23, 2012.

In the artists words, “Unreal Estate’ is a collection of locations that many of us know and have been to on a weekly basis at times, but can never actually visit. These places are in our memories transmitted and entrenched there through a cathode-ray tube. Some of us have been going to these places for decades, some of these places were taken from us, way too soon.”

A not-so-still interactive gallery piece by Scott Garner, featuring a motion-sensitive frame on a rotating mount:

Years ago I had the idea of a still life painting that wasn’t so still, but could never quite wrap my head around how to build it. After various experiments and explorations, I settled on Unity 3D as the ideal tool to make it happen.

On the hardware side is a custom-framed television connected to a rotating mount from Ergomart. Attached to the back of the television is a spatial sensor from Phidgets, makers of fine USB sensors. On the software side is a simple C application to communicate with the sensor and feed the data to a Unity 3D scene. The scene itself consists of a camera tied to the sensor data with all lights and objects parented to it so they rotate in unison.

I’ve often wondered about how the night sky looked to Van Gogh when he painted ‘Starry Night.‘

This is an homage to him, and to his painting, one of my all time favorites. We see him standing here, looking up at the night sky…probably in awe, as he wondered how he would capture the beauty he saw. As well, this was the view from the sanitarium he was staying at, as it’s well known that the poor guy was quite mentally troubled.

After realizing some abnormalities in Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze’s Washington Crossing the Delaware, Mort Kunstler did extensive research on the crossing to create what he believes is a more accurate depiction of the surprise attack.

The painting goes on display this week at the New-York Historical Society museum.

Oil painter and graphic designer Ron Piccirillo thinks that Leonardo da Vinci meant for the Mona Lisa to depict envy, based off of some images of animals he’s discovered in the painting after turning it on its side that relate to some of da Vinci’s thoughts on the subject. From The Daily What:

First, a lion’s head came into focus above the subject’s head. “Then I noticed the buffalo and I thought: ‘Oh my god’,” he says. “Then I realised I was really onto something.”

Piccirillo believes the veiled menagerie — he later discovered an ape and a crocodile-snake creature as well — suggests da Vinci meant the Mona Lisa to depict envy. Piccirillo points to a passage in da Vinci’s journals which he says confirms his theory.

In the passage, da Vinci writes that the artist who wishes to paint envy must “give her a leopard’s skin, because this creature kills the lion out of envy and by deceit.” Piccirillo claims other passages on envy in da Vinci’s notes also indicate that he is referring to the Mona Lisa.

2. He created the original Kermit using a turquoise ladies’ coat his mother had discarded and two ping-pong balls for eyes.

3. He was approached by his friend George Lucas to play the role of Yoda in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back. He declined and recommended fellow puppeteer Frank Oz for the part.

5. He attended the University of Maryland, where a statue was dedicated in his honor on September 24, 2003.

Wanting to focus on the creative side and less on the business side of production, he entered into talks with Michael Eisner to sell his company and characters (minus Sesame Street) to the Walt Disney Company.  Unfortunately, he died the weekend before the sale went through.  The deal was finalized in 2004.

7. He was featured in Boyz II Men’s video for “It’s So Hard To Say Goodbye To Yesterday” (2:03)

8. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze was dedicated to him.

9. Henson is honored both as himself and as Kermit the Frog on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The only other person to share this honor is Mel Blanc, the voice actor of Bugs Bunny.

10. He coined the term “muppets” as a meld of “marionettes” and “puppets”.

11. He was one of the first to use puppets with moving mouths instead of puppets whose heads bobbed when they talked.

12. The first movie he saw was The Wizard of Oz.

13. One of his first puppets was Pierre the French Rat.

14. He was pictured on a USA 37¢ commemorative stamp issued in September 2005.

15. The Muppets themselves were given an opportunity to pay tribute to their creator in The Muppets Celebrate Jim Henson.

16. Rowlf the Dog was one of the first muppets to get Henson nationwide attention by appearing regularly on The Jimmy Dean Show from 1963 to 1966.

17. He had a hit single, singing “Rubber Duckie” as Ernie. It stayed on the  Billboard Top 40 chart for pop/rock for seven weeks, peaking at number 16.

18. An extensive collection of his work, “The Jim Henson Works,”  can be viewed from computers in the UMD libraries.

19. He made enough money doing commercials in college that he was able to drive his own Rolls-Royce to his college graduation.

20. He died at the age of 53 from streptococcus pneumonia.

21. Per his request, no one wore black to his funeral.

“Cul De Sac” creator Richard Thompson received this  6”-by-8” oil on board painting from “Calvin & Hobbes” creator Bill Watterson as a contribution to the Team Cul de Sac fundraising project for Parkinson’s research.  It is the first new art from him that his syndicate has seen in 16 years.

The New York Times got a look into the secret art installation hidden in an abandoned subway station somewhere below New York City called The Underbelly Project.

Known to its creators and participating artists as the Underbelly Project, the space, where all the show’s artworks remain, defies every norm of the gallery scene. Collectors can’t buy the art. The public can’t see it. And the only people with a chance of stumbling across it are the urban explorers who prowl the city’s hidden infrastructure or employees of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority.

One thing that all people can agree on is the badassness that is Bill Murray. His epicness is universal, so when we started picking a theme for our next show, it really was a no brainer. Who better to focus time and energy on? Plus, the world can always use more art with BM in it. Basically: Everybody wins.

Influenced by the Dead Kennedy’s song  “Moon Over Marin”:

… detractors have called it the Dead Kennedy’s “U2″ song, but I disagree. “Moon Over Marin” is more melodic than most DK, but juxtaposed with the darkness of the lyrics, the song evokes a powerful sense of existential melancholy. I think the concept that struck me, and stuck with me, is that our disrespect of each other and the planet may doom us , but things will continue without us. I think it is healthy to recognize impermanence, but also to appreciate the value of the ephemeral. Moonlight, real or electric, will probably be around, but what it will be casting light on is the real question. There will always be a moon over Biloxi.

“as Banksy decorates North American cities co-inciding with the release of his film, and the media follows and reports each stencil in every city he hits, we can’t help but feel that Vancouver was overlooked by Banksy and his people. we wanted to communicate this invite directly to Banksy, as well as make the point that there are a handful of innovative and unique street artists in every nook and cranny of these cities that Banksy is hitting and it is a shame that the media is focusing in on one british artist, and not showing the same adoration and support for their own local talent. for example, with all of the attention placed on Banksy’s trip to Toronto, there was no mention whatsoever of artists like Poster Child or Fauxreel, or any other Toronto artists that play a large role in the street art world. In every city, this intregal part of the story is simply not being told.

to do this, we decided to rework Banksy’s classic balloon girl image, in our depiction the girl is now a woman, and she has released the balloon in lieu of pasting up this BANKSY WASN’T HERE banner.”

“Basquiat produced thousands of artworks in his short life, dashing off his poetry-infused canvases at a hair-raising pace, but footage of the artist himself has been hard to come by since his death in 1988. Director Tamra Davis, who met and befriended Basquiat when he visited LA to exhibit at the Gagosian gallery in 1983, was one of few to document the artist during his lifetime. Profoundly affected by his death, Davis hid her reels for two decades. But in 2005, prompted by a friend working on MOCA’s Basquiat retrospective of that year, Davis returned to her 80s footage to create a short, 20-minute tribute to the artist. “ The film documents Basquiat’s transformation from slouching street kid into international art world darling,  accompanied by graphic animations by artist Shepard Fairey and a soundtrack from Beastie Boys Adam Horovitz and Mike Diamond and Manhattan-based composer J. Ralph.”
