Art Collaborations With A 4-Year-Old

by 7 months, 18 days ago View Comments

Mica Angela Hendricks lets her 4-year-old daughter finish some of her drawings, and the results are pretty fantastic.

Not surprisingly, I LOVED what she drew. I had drawn a woman’s face, and she had turned her into a dinosaur-woman. It was beautiful, it was carefree, and for as much as I don’t like to share, I LOVED what she had created. Flipping through my sketchbook, I found another doodle of a face I had not yet finished. She drew a body on it, too, and I was enthralled. It was such a beautiful combination of my style and hers. And she LOVED being a part of it. She never hesitated in her intent. She wasn’t tentative. She was insistent and confident that she would of course improve any illustration I might have done. …And the thing is, she DID.

Conner and Cayden Long: 2012 SportsKids of the Year

by 1 year, 3 months ago View Comments

The Sports Illustrated Kids 2012 SportsKids of the Year are nine year old Conner Long and his seven year old brother Cayden, who was diagnosed with hypertonic cerebral palsy at four months old. Despite Cayden’s condition, the pair have competed in 14 triathlons since 2011.

A year and a half ago, he and Cayden started participating in triathlons together. Conner swims while pulling Cayden in a raft, bikes with his little brother towed behind him in a trailer, and pushes that trailer when they run. Over the past 18 months, the pair from White House, Tennessee, traveled up and down the East coast to compete in races. Seeing the brothers working together has inspired onlookers, while bringing Conner and Cayden closer than ever. Their amazing determination and spirit is why the Long brothers are the 2012 Sports Illustrated Kids SportsKids of the Year.
