A free new app called Wedding Party updates the traditional disposable camera bit and allows your guests to submit all of their photos from your big day into a collective photo album via their phones. The uploaded photos, which are also seamlessly uploaded to an accompanying website, can be pushed out to Facebook as a photo album through one click. The app also allows guests (even those not in attendance) to comment and interact through the photos as well.

The app is currently available in full on iOS and as a beta on Android.

A photography experiment that asks users “What if you could only take one more photo. One to share with the world forever. What would you capture?”

After they’ve answered that question and loaded the app, they can either upload a photo in their library or snap the photo while applying filters and adding comments. Once they’ve broken the seal, they have a 2-hour window to make sure it’s the photo they want to use. The project will only collect 250,000 submissions.

Unbaby.me has started the fight against this glamorized and gluttonous oversharing of marital and familial bliss by replacing baby photos from your Newsfeed “with awesome stuff.”

After being handed a $50 bill along with this note by a “raggedy dressed man” on a train, Redditor delverofsecrets turned to Reddit to decode the note, which was quickly identified as using a Bifid Cipher. The translated message reads:

THERE’S PLENTY MORE MONEY TO MAKE FIGURE THIS OUT AND PREPARE TO MEET JULY 19 FIFTY SIXTH AND SIXTH HOT DOG STAND OUTSIDE RUE57 CAFE ASK FOR MISTER INPUT.

After discovering the fact that the note had been spread around the Reddit community, “Mister Input” sent a message to delverofsecrets under the name hoboman (which was apparently sent from a US Department of Defense Network IP address), stating the following:

You may not believe me, but I will remind you of your personalized backpack [personal information redacted] You have recruited the help of friends, the offer is now on the table for them too. I cannot have strangers inquire about me, rather we will use a proxy. Here is the next step: DWY JLRR QUBPKSJ IL NDLM OQD OUCEQMW KGXI CSH RFRM XL WEZUXKJ. YME QLPRBAZ OQD TPVJG HPM UK CQJS H. This coded part of the message, which was also translated by the community, reads:

YOU HAVE MANAGED TO FIND THE MESSAGE WITH THE HELP OF FRIENDS. YOU CHANGED THE RULES NOW SO WILL I. JULY TWELVE FOUR PM. FIND THE BLUE JAY AT SIX AND A HALF AND FIFTY SIXTH AND TELL HIM YOU ARE THE LAST.

In an interesting twist, a contributing Redditor discovered that a Google Street View snapshot of that location shows a UPS delivery man with what appears to be a blue jay tattoo on his arm.

The debate rages on in regards to whether or not this is some clever viral marketing scheme for The Dark Knight Rises (whose release date coincides with the date in the original message), or BASE Entertainment’s upcoming Spy exhibit. Regardless, the story is an interesting one and continues to develop at the original post.

The Transit of Venus occurred yesterday around 3pm PST. If you missed it, NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory has put together a stunning timelapse of the extremely important astronomical event.

On June 5 2012, SDO collected images of the rarest predictable solar event–the transit of Venus across the face of the sun.  This event happens in pairs eight years apart that are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years.  The last transit was in 2004 and the next will not happen until 2117.

The videos and images displayed here are constructed from several wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light and a portion of the visible spectrum.  The red colored sun is the 304 angstrom ultraviolet, the golden colored sun is 171 angstrom, the magenta sun is 1700 angstrom, and the orange sun is filtered visible light.  304 and 171 show the atmosphere of the sun, which does not appear in the visible part of the spectrum.

Jack Cook and Howard Perlman’s illustration of all the water on Earth as a single sphere showed up on Buzzfeed a week ago, but it just seemed to small to be accurate. Turns out, it is.

Although oceans of water cover about 70 percent of Earth’s surface, these oceans are shallow compared to the Earth’s radius. The above illustration shows what would happen if all of the water on or near the surface of the Earth were bunched up into a ball. The radius of this ball would be only about 700 kilometers, less than half the radius of the Earth’s Moon, but slightly larger than Saturn’s moon Rhea which, like many moons in our outer Solar System, is mostly water ice.

I recently created Music Video Genome. It’s essentially Pandora for music videos (or a personalized MTV). Through the power of VHX’s new API, Last.fm and YouTube, it made it quite simple to accomplish.

This past weekend I participated in a video hackday. You get 24 hours to start and finish a video based project. At the end everyone demos their speed hack.

My project morphed several times over the course of the weekend, but the final result ended up being something I’m really enjoying.

I called it Genome because it’s not that simple to match music videos to real songs. Most music “videos” on YouTube are just a stupid static image. Granted not all songs have music videos, but it would be amazing if I could crowd-source the documentation of music videos to songs. If a song does not have an official music video, fans could make their own and have it bubble up as the official video.

Steve Jobs has announced that he will resign from the position as CEO of Apple Inc. in a letter to the Board of Directors:

To the Apple Board of Directors and the Apple Community:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

Google just announced on its blog that it will be adding a weather layer to Google Maps.

To add the weather layer, hover over the widget in the upper right corner of Google Maps and select the weather layer from the list of options. When zoomed out, you’ll see a map with current weather conditions from weather.com for various locations, with icons to denote sun, clouds, rain and so on. You can also see cloud coverage, thanks to our partners at the U.S. Naval Research Lab. And, if you look closely, you can also tell if it’s day or night around the world by sun and moon icons.
