Cells of the immune system protect the body against pathogens. If cells in our bodies are infected by viruses, or become cancerous, then killer cells of the immune system identify and destroy the affected cells. Cytotoxic T cells are very precise and efficient killers. They are able to destroy infected or cancerous cells, without destroying healthy cells surrounding them. By understanding how this works, we can develop ways to control killer cells. This will allow us to find ways to improve cancer therapies, and ameliorate autoimmune diseases caused when killer cells run amok and attack healthy cells in our bodies.

Court Rules Prop. 8: Gay-Marriage Ban Unconstitutional – [LA Times]

A federal appeals court Tuesday struck down California’s ban on same-sex marriage, clearing the way for the U.S. Supreme Court to rule on gay marriage as early as next year.

The 2-1 decision by a panel of the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals found that Proposition 8, the 2008 ballot measure that limited marriage to one man and one woman, violated the U.S. Constitution. The architects of Prop. 8 have vowed to appeal.

The ruling was narrow and likely to be limited to California.

“Proposition 8 served no purpose, and had no effect, other than to lessen the status and human dignity of gays and lesbians in California,” the court said.

Somali Pirate Six Toe Joe Seized By Royal Navy – [Huffington Post]

A pirate with six toes on each foot has been captured by a Royal Navy operation in the Indian Ocean. The Somalian, known as Six Toe Joe, was one of 14 suspects handed over to the Seychelles authorities. He also has ten fingers and two thumbs due to a condition known as polydactyly, the Sun reported.

A source told the newspaper: “He’s the modern day Long John Silver. When you think of pirates you think of peg legs, not excessive fingers and toes, but the rumours proved to be true!” The men were rounded up by the Royal Fleet Auxiliary ship RFA Fort Victoria, under a NATO-led operation.

Crafty hackers last night managed to hijack the official website of embattled breast-cancer charity Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and express their dismay at the organization’s politically expedient decision to pull Planned Parenthood grants funding breast-cancer screenings for uninsured and underinsured low-income patients.

The switch was simple, but the message was clear: A banner previously calling women to join a run aimed at ridding the world of breast cancer now read “help us run over poor women on our way to the bank.”

How David Choe’s 2005 bet is going to pay out, big time. From The New York Times:

In 2005, Mr. Choe was invited to paint murals on the walls of Facebook’s first offices in Palo Alto, Calif., by Sean Parker, then Facebook’s president. As pay, Mr. Parker offered Mr. Choe a choice between cash in the “thousands of dollars,” according to several people who know Mr. Choe, or stock then worth about the same.

Mr. Choe, who has said that at the time that he thought the idea of Facebook was “ridiculous and pointless,” nevertheless chose the stock.

When Facebook stock trades publicly later this year, those shares  are expected to be worth upward of $200 million.

After two decades of drilling, Russian scientists are on the verge of coming into contact with Lake Vostok, Antarctica’s biggest subglacial lake, that has been buried beneath 13,000 ft of ice for more than 20 million years.

Reaching Lake Vostok would represent the first direct contact with what scientists now know is a web of more than 200 subglacial lakes in Antarctica — some of which existed when the continent was connected to Australia and was much warmer. They stay liquid because of heat from the core of the planet.

“This is a huge moment for science and exploration, breaking through to this enormous lake that we didn’t even know existed until the 1990s,” said John Priscu, a researcher at Montana State University who has long been involved in antarctic research, including a study of Vostok ice cores.

“If it goes well, a breakthrough opens up a whole new chapter in our understanding of our planet and possibly moons in our solar system and planets far beyond,” he said. “If it doesn’t go well, it casts a pall over the whole effort to explore this wet underside of Antarctica.”

Pfizer Recalls 1 Million Birth Control Pills – [Healthland]

About 1 million packets of birth control pills are being recalled in the U.S. by Pfizer because a packaging mishap could increase the likelihood of pregnancy.

The problem, which has since been corrected, seems to have been caused by inspection failures. “As a result of this packaging error, the daily regimen for these oral contraceptives may be incorrect and could leave women without adequate contraception, and at risk for unintended pregnancy,” Pfizer said in a statement released Tuesday. “…Consumers exposed to affected packaging should begin using a non-hormonal form of contraception immediately.”

Soul Train Creator/Host Don Cornelius Found Dead of Apparent Suicide – [TMZ]

Don Cornelius — who famously created “Soul Train” was found dead in his Sherman Oaks, CA home this morning … and law enforcement sources tell us it appears he committed suicide.

We’re told cops discovered the body at around 4 AM PT.  Law enforcement sources tell us … Cornelius died from a gunshot wound to the head and officials believe the wound was self-inflicted.
